Chartered Certified Accountants for Barking’s trades, logistics firms, care providers and independent traders.
Barking has an unusually practical business base — construction, logistics, motor trade, care and independent retail, much of it self-employed or small limited companies with a handful of staff. It is also changing quickly, with the Barking Riverside development bringing new residents, new landlords and a steady supply of new trades work.
MSCO is a firm of Chartered Certified Accountants working across IG11 from our office in E1. We do accounts, corporation tax, self assessment, CIS, VAT, payroll and bookkeeping on fixed fees, with the first consultation free.
What we do
Whatever stage you are at, we cover the full range of compliance and advisory work from our office a short journey from Barking:
Statutory accounts prepared and filed at Companies House, with the numbers explained in plain English.
Cloud bookkeeping on Xero, QuickBooks or Sage so your figures are current, not six months old.
RTI payroll, pensions auto-enrolment, payslips and P60s handled every pay run.
Registration, scheme selection and Making Tax Digital compliant quarterly filing.
Personal and business tax returns prepared, checked for reliefs and filed before the deadline.
Company formation, HMRC registrations and the structure decisions that are hard to unwind later.
Straightforward accounts and tax for self-employed people, including CIS subcontractors.
Confirmation statements, Companies House filings and HMRC correspondence kept on schedule.

Who we help
Construction and the trades are the biggest single group we deal with in Barking. Most are operating under CIS, most have twenty percent deducted at source, and a large proportion are owed money back once tools, materials, travel, protective equipment and use of a vehicle are properly accounted for. Beyond that, there is real depth in logistics and courier work around the A13 and the riverside industrial estates, plus a growing number of domiciliary care providers running payrolls that need genuine attention.
Why MSCO
If you are self-employed in the trades, the value of an accountant is measured in two numbers: what you get back, and how little of your evening it costs you. We keep the paperwork to photographs of receipts, agree the fee up front, and chase the refund without you having to ring HMRC.
Local expertise
The mistake we correct most often locally is subcontractors under-claiming. People remember tools and materials but forget mileage between sites, protective clothing, phone use, insurance, professional subscriptions, and the cost of a van including its running and finance costs. Done properly and honestly, those legitimate expenses often move a refund by a meaningful amount — and none of it involves anything HMRC would object to.
Local proof
Two situations that come up repeatedly here, and how they are usually dealt with:
Twenty percent is deducted from a subcontractor’s payments before they see it, calculated on the labour element with no account taken of costs. People remember tools and materials but forget mileage between sites, protective clothing, phone use, insurance, professional subscriptions and the running and finance costs of a van. Done properly, those legitimate expenses move most refunds by a meaningful amount.
The other common IG11 job is someone driving for delivery apps who is not sure whether they are employed. For tax purposes they are almost always self-employed and need to register once income passes the trading allowance. The advice that matters is to keep a mileage record from day one — reconstructing it a year later is painful and considerably less convincing.

Common questions
It depends entirely on your income and allowable expenses, so nobody can promise a figure honestly. What we can say is that most subcontractors who have twenty percent deducted at source and have genuine costs are due something back. Send us your statements and we will tell you the position before you commit to anything.
For tax purposes you are almost certainly self-employed and need to register and file a return once your income passes the trading allowance. You can claim mileage or actual vehicle costs, phone use and equipment. Keep a mileage record from day one — reconstructing it later is painful and less convincing.
Yes. Care payroll is genuinely demanding — variable hours, travel time between visits, sleep-in shifts and National Minimum Wage compliance that HMRC inspects. We run the payroll and flag where your recording or rates may not stand up.
Fees depend on the size of the business and how much work is involved, so we quote after a short conversation rather than publishing a one-size-fits-all price. What we can promise is that the fee is fixed and agreed in writing before we start. Most sole traders and small limited companies find our pricing sits comfortably against comparable London firms.
It is easier than most people expect and takes about ten minutes of your time. You tell your existing accountant you are moving, we write to them for professional clearance and your records, and we handle the handover of your HMRC and Companies House authorisations. You can switch at any point in the year, not just at your year end.
No. Plenty of our clients we meet in person, and plenty we have never met at a desk at all — documents come in by email or cloud folder and we talk by phone or video. Both work equally well. If you would rather sit down together, our office on Mile End Road is easy to reach and parking nearby is manageable outside peak hours.
