Chartered Certified Accountants for Bow’s trades, studios and small companies, a few minutes down the road in E1.
Bow is a working postcode. Behind the Roman Road market and the terraces there is a long run of yards, workshops and converted units towards Fish Island and Hackney Wick, and a lot of the business we do in E3 comes from exactly those places — builders, joiners, fabricators, printers, studio operators and the trades that keep east London’s construction going.
MSCO is a firm of Chartered Certified Accountants a short journey away on Mile End Road. We do accounts, corporation tax, self assessment, CIS, VAT, payroll and bookkeeping on fixed fees, with the first meeting free.
What we do
Whatever stage you are at, we cover the full range of compliance and advisory work from our office a short journey from Bow:
Statutory accounts prepared and filed at Companies House, with the numbers explained in plain English.
Cloud bookkeeping on Xero, QuickBooks or Sage so your figures are current, not six months old.
RTI payroll, pensions auto-enrolment, payslips and P60s handled every pay run.
Registration, scheme selection and Making Tax Digital compliant quarterly filing.
Personal and business tax returns prepared, checked for reliefs and filed before the deadline.
Company formation, HMRC registrations and the structure decisions that are hard to unwind later.
Straightforward accounts and tax for self-employed people, including CIS subcontractors.
Confirmation statements, Companies House filings and HMRC correspondence kept on schedule.
Who we help
Construction dominates. That brings the Construction Industry Scheme, subcontractor verification, monthly returns and the domestic reverse charge for VAT — a rule that still trips up firms five years after it landed, usually because someone kept charging VAT on a job that should have been reverse charged. Alongside that there is a real creative cluster around Fish Island: studios, makers, photographers and small production companies, most of them one or two people with lumpy income and no interest in bookkeeping.
Why MSCO
Trades clients want three things from an accountant: get the CIS right, get the refund back, and do not make them fill in forms. We aim for exactly that. Fixed fee, a named contact, and a bookkeeping setup that works off photos of receipts from a phone rather than a shoebox in December.
Local expertise
The VAT domestic reverse charge is still the biggest recurring problem we see in E3. If you are a subcontractor supplying construction services to another VAT registered contractor, you generally should not be charging VAT on that invoice at all — the customer accounts for it. Get it wrong in one direction and you have paid HMRC money you did not owe; get it wrong in the other and you have a bill plus penalties. We check it as part of the quarterly return rather than waiting for an enquiry.
Local proof
Two situations that come up repeatedly here, and how they are usually dealt with:
The VAT domestic reverse charge is still the most common error we correct in E3. If you supply construction services to another VAT registered business that is not the end user, you generally should not be charging VAT at all — the customer accounts for it. Get it wrong one way and you have paid HMRC money you did not owe; the other way and there is an assessment with penalties attached. We check it as part of the quarterly return rather than waiting for an enquiry.
The second regular job is a one or two person studio with genuinely lumpy income. The fix is rarely clever tax planning; it is putting money aside on a schedule and knowing what is due before it is due. Payments on account catch almost everyone the first January they apply, because the bill arrives as one and a half years of tax at once.

Common questions
Yes. We verify subcontractors with HMRC, calculate the correct deduction rate, file the monthly CIS return and produce the payment and deduction statements. If you are the subcontractor rather than the contractor, we reclaim the overpaid tax through your self assessment.
It applies to most construction services supplied between VAT registered businesses where the customer is not the end user. Instead of you charging VAT, the customer accounts for it on their own return. It affects your cash flow as well as your paperwork, and it is worth a fifteen minute call to confirm which of your jobs are caught.
Yes, and it mostly comes down to putting money aside on a schedule rather than in a panic. We give you an estimate of what will be due and when, so a strong quarter does not turn into a January problem. Payments on account catch a lot of people the first time they hit them.
Fees depend on the size of the business and how much work is involved, so we quote after a short conversation rather than publishing a one-size-fits-all price. What we can promise is that the fee is fixed and agreed in writing before we start. Most sole traders and small limited companies find our pricing sits comfortably against comparable London firms.
It is easier than most people expect and takes about ten minutes of your time. You tell your existing accountant you are moving, we write to them for professional clearance and your records, and we handle the handover of your HMRC and Companies House authorisations. You can switch at any point in the year, not just at your year end.
No. Plenty of our clients we meet in person, and plenty we have never met at a desk at all — documents come in by email or cloud folder and we talk by phone or video. Both work equally well. If you would rather sit down together, our office on Mile End Road is easy to reach and parking nearby is manageable outside peak hours.
