Chartered Accountants in Canary Wharf
Chartered Certified Accountants two DLR stops from Canary Wharf, working with contractors, consultants and owner-managed businesses in E14.
Canary Wharf generates a particular kind of accountancy problem. Not usually a complicated business — more often a well-paid individual whose tax affairs quietly became complicated without anyone warning them. Bonuses that pushed income past the personal allowance taper. Share awards that vested. A rental flat. A consultancy set up on the side that is now the main income. None of it is difficult on its own, and all of it is expensive to get wrong.
MSCO is a firm of Chartered Certified Accountants based on Mile End Road, a short DLR or Jubilee line hop from the Wharf. We work with E14 contractors, consultants, limited company directors and small businesses on self assessment, company accounts, VAT and payroll, on fixed fees agreed up front.

Who we help
Canary Wharf businesses we work with
The businesses we see in and around Canary Wharf split fairly neatly. There are the independent contractors and consultants — technology, change management, risk, compliance, project delivery — most operating through their own limited company and most needing a clear-eyed view on IR35, dividend versus salary and what is genuinely claimable. There are the professional service firms in the smaller buildings off the estate. And there is a whole service economy around the towers: cleaning contractors, catering, fitness studios, couriers and maintenance firms whose clients are the buildings themselves.
- IT, finance and management consultants operating through limited companies
- Contractors inside and outside IR35 who need the position assessed properly
- High earners with bonuses, share awards or income over £100,000
- Landlords letting in Canary Wharf, Wood Wharf and the surrounding docks
- Service businesses supplying the estate, from catering to facilities and cleaning
- Directors of small professional practices in E14
Why MSCO
Why Canary Wharf clients choose MSCO
Canary Wharf clients tend to be short on time and allergic to being chased. So we do the chasing internally: you get a reminder well before the deadline, a fixed fee agreed in advance, and a real person who answers the phone rather than an inbox that replies in three working days. Most of our E14 work runs by email and video call, with an office five minutes away if you would rather sit down.
- Chartered Certified Accountants, providing a first-class service since 2007
- Free initial consultation with no obligation and no sales pressure
- Fixed fees agreed in advance, so there is never a surprise invoice
- A named accountant who answers the phone, not a ticket queue
- We handle the switch from your current accountant, including the professional clearance letter
- Xero, QuickBooks and Sage certified, with in-person or video meetings as you prefer
Local expertise
Local knowledge, not a call centre
The single most valuable conversation we have with people at the Wharf is usually about structure. Whether the limited company is still the right vehicle now the dividend allowance has shrunk. Whether a spouse should hold shares. Whether the pension contribution should come from the company. Whether that second flat is a business or an expensive hobby. Those decisions are worth far more than the fee, and they are the ones that get skipped when your accountant only appears in January.
Local proof
The work we do in Canary Wharf
Two situations that come up repeatedly here, and how they are usually dealt with:
Contractors moving between inside and outside IR35
The work here usually starts with a status determination the contractor had no part in. We read the actual contract and, more importantly, how the engagement really works — substitution, control, whether you are part and parcel of the client’s organisation — and set the company up to operate correctly on that basis rather than leaving a problem to surface at an enquiry.
High earners in the 60% band
The second common job is an employee whose tax code keeps changing, usually because of the personal allowance taper plus benefits in kind being estimated by HMRC. Between £100,000 and £125,140 the effective marginal rate reaches around 60%, and a pension contribution made before the tax year ends is one of the most efficient responses available. Made afterwards, it does nothing for that year.

Common questions
Accountants in Canary Wharf – frequently asked questions
I contract through my own limited company. Can you handle IR35?
Yes. We will look at your actual contracts and working practices rather than giving you a generic answer, tell you where you realistically sit, and set the company up to run efficiently on that basis. If a contract is caught, we make sure the payroll and tax treatment reflect it properly instead of leaving a problem to surface later.
My income is over £100,000 and my tax code keeps changing. Can you sort it?
That is usually the personal allowance taper plus benefits in kind being estimated by HMRC. We file the return, get the code corrected, and where it applies look at whether pension contributions or charitable giving can pull the effective rate back down from the 60% band. It is a common fix and often pays for the fee several times over.
Do I need to come to your office?
Almost none of our Canary Wharf clients do. Documents come in by email or a shared cloud folder, we talk by video or phone, and everything is signed electronically. That said we are only a short DLR ride away if you would prefer to meet.
How much do your accountancy services cost?
Fees depend on the size of the business and how much work is involved, so we quote after a short conversation rather than publishing a one-size-fits-all price. What we can promise is that the fee is fixed and agreed in writing before we start. Most sole traders and small limited companies find our pricing sits comfortably against comparable London firms.
How do I switch from my current accountant?
It is easier than most people expect and takes about ten minutes of your time. You tell your existing accountant you are moving, we write to them for professional clearance and your records, and we handle the handover of your HMRC and Companies House authorisations. You can switch at any point in the year, not just at your year end.
Do I have to come into your office?
No. Plenty of our clients we meet in person, and plenty we have never met at a desk at all — documents come in by email or cloud folder and we talk by phone or video. Both work equally well. If you would rather sit down together, our office on Mile End Road is easy to reach and parking nearby is manageable outside peak hours.
