Chartered Accountants in Limehouse

Chartered Certified Accountants for Limehouse consultants, freelancers, landlords and small companies.

Limehouse is largely residential now, and the accountancy work reflects that: a lot of individuals with slightly complicated tax affairs rather than shopfronts with tills. Consultants and media freelancers working from home offices in the converted wharves around the Basin, landlords letting in the same buildings, and small companies run by one or two people who wanted a short commute.

MSCO is a firm of Chartered Certified Accountants a few minutes away on Mile End Road. We deal with self assessment, limited company accounts, corporation tax, VAT and payroll on fixed fees, with a free initial consultation.

  • Chartered Certified Accountants
  • Providing a first-class service since 2007
  • Fixed fees agreed in advance

Who we help

Limehouse businesses we work with

The recurring theme in E14’s residential streets is the person with more than one income source. Employment plus freelance work. Freelance work plus a rental. A company plus dividends plus a bit of consulting invoiced personally. Each strand is simple; together they produce a tax return that people either avoid or get wrong, and a payment on account system that catches almost everyone out the first year it applies.

  • Consultants and freelancers working from home offices in E14
  • Media, film and production freelancers
  • Landlords letting flats around Limehouse Basin and the wharves
  • One and two person limited companies
  • People with employment income alongside self-employment or rental income
  • Small marine, leisure and hospitality businesses around the Basin

Why MSCO

Why Limehouse clients choose MSCO

If your tax return is the only thing you need, we will do just that, properly, for a fixed fee, without trying to sell you a monthly package you do not need. If it later turns into a company and a payroll, we can scale up. Most people would rather start there than be upsold from day one.

  • Chartered Certified Accountants, providing a first-class service since 2007
  • Free initial consultation with no obligation and no sales pressure
  • Fixed fees agreed in advance, so there is never a surprise invoice
  • A named accountant who answers the phone, not a ticket queue
  • We handle the switch from your current accountant, including the professional clearance letter
  • Xero, QuickBooks and Sage certified, with in-person or video meetings as you prefer

Local expertise

Local knowledge, not a call centre

Working from home is the deduction people most often get wrong in either direction — either claiming nothing at all, or claiming a share of the mortgage that will not survive scrutiny and can create a capital gains problem when the flat is sold. There is a sensible middle: a proportionate claim for the space and running costs actually used for business, properly evidenced. For a full-time home worker that is worth having, and it is worth having correctly.

Local proof

The work we do in Limehouse

Two situations that come up repeatedly here, and how they are usually dealt with:

Consultants and freelancers working from home

Working from home is the deduction people get wrong in both directions. Some claim nothing at all; others claim a share of the mortgage that will not survive scrutiny and can create a capital gains problem when the flat is sold. There is a sensible middle — a proportionate claim for the space and running costs genuinely used for work, properly evidenced — and for a full-time home worker it is worth having.

People with more than one income source

The typical E14 residential client has employment income plus freelance work, or a rental, or a company and some consulting invoiced personally. Each strand is simple and the combination is where errors happen. Most of what we correct on returns prepared elsewhere is omission rather than anything exotic.

Common questions

Accountants in Limehouse – frequently asked questions

I have a job and do freelance work on the side. Do I need to file a return?

If your gross self-employed income exceeds the trading allowance you need to register for self assessment and file. Your employment tax is already handled through PAYE, so the return simply adds the extra income and works out the additional tax. It is straightforward once it is set up.

What can I claim for working from home?

A reasonable proportion of heating, lighting, broadband and other running costs based on how much of the property and how much of the time is genuinely used for work. There is also a flat rate option which is simpler but usually smaller. We would steer you away from claiming a share of mortgage interest or rates unless the circumstances truly support it.

What are payments on account and why is my first bill so large?

Once your self assessment liability passes a threshold, HMRC asks you to pay half of next year’s estimated tax in January and half in July, on top of the balance for the year just gone. So the first January can feel like one and a half years of tax at once. We warn you in advance and can apply to reduce the payments where your income has genuinely fallen.

How much do your accountancy services cost?

Fees depend on the size of the business and how much work is involved, so we quote after a short conversation rather than publishing a one-size-fits-all price. What we can promise is that the fee is fixed and agreed in writing before we start. Most sole traders and small limited companies find our pricing sits comfortably against comparable London firms.

How do I switch from my current accountant?

It is easier than most people expect and takes about ten minutes of your time. You tell your existing accountant you are moving, we write to them for professional clearance and your records, and we handle the handover of your HMRC and Companies House authorisations. You can switch at any point in the year, not just at your year end.

Do I have to come into your office?

No. Plenty of our clients we meet in person, and plenty we have never met at a desk at all — documents come in by email or cloud folder and we talk by phone or video. Both work equally well. If you would rather sit down together, our office on Mile End Road is easy to reach and parking nearby is manageable outside peak hours.
