Self Assessment Tax Returns in Romford
Fixed-fee self assessment tax returns for Romford directors, contractors, landlords and self-employed professionals.
Romford’s tax returns tend to belong to people who have been doing this for a while — established directors, long-standing landlords, contractors on their fifth or sixth year of trading. The returns get filed. The question is usually whether anyone has looked at them properly, or simply carried last year’s figures forward with new numbers.
We prepare and file self assessment returns for individuals across Havering on a fixed fee agreed up front, and we review the position rather than just typing in your totals.

Who we help
Romford businesses we work with
The recurring Romford profile is a company director with a property or two and a pension they have not thought about. Salary and dividends from the company, rental profit, sometimes a capital gain from a disposal, and a set of allowances that are now much smaller than they were a few years ago. Dividend and capital gains allowances have both been cut substantially, which has quietly pulled people into filing obligations and higher bills without any change in what they actually earn.
- Company directors taking salary and dividends
- Contractors and consultants working through their own companies
- Landlords with property portfolios across Havering and Essex
- Self-employed tradespeople and professionals
- People who have sold a property or investments and need to report a gain
- Higher earners affected by the personal allowance taper or child benefit charge

Local expertise
Local knowledge, not a call centre
Two allowance changes are worth knowing about because they catch people who have done nothing wrong. The dividend allowance is now very small, so directors who previously paid little or no tax on modest dividends now do. And the capital gains annual exempt amount has been cut sharply, which means disposals that would once have fallen comfortably within the allowance now create a reporting obligation and a bill. UK residential property gains also have their own short reporting and payment deadline after completion, separate from the annual return — missing it produces penalties even when the tax is eventually paid.

The work we do in Romford
Two situations that come up repeatedly here, and how they are usually dealt with:
Two allowance changes catching Havering directors
The dividend allowance has been cut sharply while the rates have risen, so directors who previously paid little or nothing on modest dividends now do — without anything about their income changing. The capital gains annual exempt amount has been reduced on the same pattern, which pulls disposals that once fell comfortably inside the allowance into a reporting obligation and a bill.

Common questions
Self assessment tax returns in Romford – frequently asked questions
I sold a property. When do I need to report the gain?
For UK residential property where a gain arises, there is a separate report and payment due within a short window after completion, well before the normal self assessment deadline. The gain also goes on your annual return. Missing the earlier deadline creates penalties even if the tax is later paid in full, so tell your accountant before you complete, not after.
Why am I paying tax on dividends I did not pay tax on before?
Because the tax-free dividend allowance has been reduced substantially in recent years while the rates have risen. Nothing about your income needs to have changed for your bill to increase. It is one of the reasons the salary, dividend and pension mix is worth revisiting annually.
I earn over £60,000 and claim child benefit. Is that a problem?
Not a problem, but it does create a tax charge that is collected through self assessment, which means you need to file. The charge increases as income rises through the relevant band. Pension contributions reduce the income figure used for the calculation, which is often the sensible response.
How much do your accountancy services cost?
Fees depend on the size of the business and how much work is involved, so we quote after a short conversation rather than publishing a one-size-fits-all price. What we can promise is that the fee is fixed and agreed in writing before we start. Most sole traders and small limited companies find our pricing sits comfortably against comparable London firms.
How do I switch from my current accountant?
It is easier than most people expect and takes about ten minutes of your time. You tell your existing accountant you are moving, we write to them for professional clearance and your records, and we handle the handover of your HMRC and Companies House authorisations. You can switch at any point in the year, not just at your year end.
Do I have to come into your office?
No. Plenty of our clients we meet in person, and plenty we have never met at a desk at all — documents come in by email or cloud folder and we talk by phone or video. Both work equally well. If you would rather sit down together, our office on Mile End Road is easy to reach and parking nearby is manageable outside peak hours.
